Sustainable printing with Kyocera showcases efficient printing technology designed to reduce environmental impact while supporting everyday workplace needs.

Sustainability isn’t a feature Kyocera tacks on at the end. It’s built in at every stage. From the earliest design decisions, engineers think carefully about the materials that go in, the energy the device will draw once it’s running, and how easily its components can be reused or recycled when it eventually retires. That thinking also extends to how devices are packaged and transported. The result is printing technology built to do its job with as little waste as possible.

If you’re looking at ways to lower running costs and be more eco-conscious in the process, here’s how Kyocera’s approach to sustainable printing works in practice, and what it means for your business.

What makes printing sustainable?

The environmental cost of a printer isn’t just about the machine sitting on your desk. It also includes everything that flows through it over the years you own it and the materials used to get it there in the first place.

A printer that lasts a decade but burns through cartridges every few weeks isn’t sustainable. Neither is an efficient one that ends up in landfill the moment it breaks. Real sustainability depends on getting four things right at once:

Kyocera takes each of these areas into account across the lifecycle of its devices, from long-life components through to packaging and recycling.

Kyocera’s long-life, sustainable design

So how does “sustainability built in at every stage” actually show up in the hardware? ECOSYS is Kyocera‘s core design philosophy, and it’s been the company’s approach since the early 1990s: build the parts that normally wear out so they last far longer than the industry standard. That means fewer replacement parts and less waste.

That principle runs through every printer, from the parts inside the machine to the cartridges and power it uses.

Long-life components

Kyocera’s background in fine ceramics is what makes the durability of their printer parts possible. The drum (the part that actually forms the image) is coated in amorphous silicon, a ceramic-like material second only to diamond in hardness. This lets it keep working for the life of the machine rather than being swapped out every few thousand pages.

Where a typical office drum might manage 100,000 pages, Kyocera’s are rated for hundreds of thousands, up to 600,000 or more on many models. The developer unit and fuser are built to last just as long, so they rarely need replacing either. You can find more on the technology here.

Toner-only cartridges

Because those durable parts stay inside the machine, the cartridge you actually replace only holds toner. Not a drum, developer, and plastic housing bundled in and thrown out every time the toner runs low. It’s the difference between binning a small toner container and binning a whole assembly. Less plastic reaches landfill, and it keeps your running costs low, because you’re only paying for the toner you’ve used rather than a full set of components that didn’t need replacing yet.

Energy-saving features

Kyocera backs its efficiency with numbers. ECOSYS models are ENERGY STAR certified and list a weekly electricity rating (TEC), so you can compare running costs before you choose them. On a model like the ECOSYS MA4000x, for example, it’s as little as 0.35 kWh a week. That works out to just a few dollars a year to run.

Most of the savings come from downtime. When no one’s printing, the machine slips into a low-power sleep mode that draws barely more than a switched-off phone charger, and powers down on its own if left longer.

Reducing packaging waste

Kyocera is also reducing the environmental impact of how its devices are packaged and transported. Recent initiatives include replacing plastic foam with paper-based cushioning made primarily from recycled paper pulp moulds and corrugated cardboard. They’ve also developed smarter packaging to use less material and take up less space during transport.

These changes help reduce packaging waste and improve transport efficiency before the printer even reaches your office.

Kyocera recycling and take-back programs

Durable hardware handles half the problem. The other half is what happens once the components or the machine itself is spent. That’s where Kyocera’s recycling programs come in.

Toner cartridge recycling

Recycling your used toner containers is free in Australia through Kyocera’s Close-the-Loop program. You register online, a collection box arrives for your office, and once it’s full, you book a pickup.

From there, the containers go to certified Australian facilities where nothing goes to landfill. The recovered material is turned into new products, including TonerPlas®, an additive that makes road asphalt more durable.

Paper-offset programs

Paper is one of the biggest consumables in printing, and there’s only so far you can cut it down. That’s why Kyocera partners with PrintReleaf to offset it through certified reforestation projects worldwide. It plugs into your print monitoring, tracks your fleet’s paper use automatically, and converts it into trees replanted, roughly one tree for every 8,333 sheets. Across Australia and New Zealand, Kyocera customers have already offset tens of millions of sheets this way, reforesting thousands of trees.

Device recycling

When a printer itself finally reaches the end of its life, it doesn’t have to become e-waste. Through a partnership with Ecycle Solutions, Kyocera collects old devices from customers in metro areas and recycles them properly, keeping more than 90% of the material out of landfill.

The Kyocera printer is designed for high-volume business printing, combining versatile functionality with efficient document management.

What is the most eco-friendly printer from Kyocera?

Within Kyocera’s range, the ECOSYS MZ3201ix is the latest example of what sustainable printing is capable of. It’s an A3 monochrome multifunction device built on the same ECOSYS foundations covered above: a long-life drum designed to outlast the toner many times over, a toner-only cartridge system, and the low-power fusing and eco modes that keep energy use down.
